JOB FAIR GROWS AS ECONOMY STRENGTHENS

"YOUR HIRED"

Thousands of applications were distributed during The Pacific Radio Group Summer Job Fair held today at the Queen Kaahumanu Center. Event organizer, Charly Espina-Takahama of Pacific Radio Group says the fair has evolved over the past seven years growing from just 20 participants in the first year to nearly 70 businesses today. Espina-Takahama says the island’s strong economy and low unemployment rate has many businesses left with vacancies that have gone unfilled. The event’s “You’re Hired!” theme was selected for that reason, countering the phrase made popular by Donald Trump on popular television show, “The Apprentice.”

Upon opening at 10 a.m. dozens of applicants had already formed a line at the “go!” booth, the Hawaii subsidiary of the Phoenix-based Mesa Airlines, which launches service in the interisland market in June. Shelly Matz, the airline’s Corporate Recruiter says at least 40 people were already waiting for applications when she arrived this morning. The airline was accepting applications for Pilots, Flight Attendants, Warehouse, Maintenance and Ground Operations. Meantime, competitor Hawaiian Airlines had distributed more than 100 information packets within the first hour with positions being advertised primarily for Contract Servicemen.

Repeat fair participant, the Maui Police Department was also on hand, looking to fill 43 vacancies in patrol and at least 12 dispatch positions. Davlynn Racadio with the Dispatch Department says the dispatcher job is challenging in part because of the high volume of calls received. Acting Lt. Jamie Becraft says that in addition to the patrol and dispatch openings, the department is also looking for a Crime Scene Processor, a Molokai Dispatcher and a Dog Warden for Lanai. In the first hour of the fair, the MPD had distributed about a dozen applications each for patrol and dispatch.
