TRANSLATORS BOOST RADIO REACH ON MAUI

Radio never sounded so good!  Pacific Radio Group’s FM stations on Maui received an upgrade in the form of four new Translators.  Just as an interpreter listens in one language and speaks in another, a radio translator receives a signal from one channel and transmits it again on another frequency assignment.

That means a station like KPOA can still be heard on its regular 93.5-FM frequency in areas reached by its main Ulupalakua tower; but in harder to reach areas like Lahaina and Honokowai that are blocked by the West Maui Mountains, the signal is now bounced off of a directional antenna on Lanai and sent directly down to the west side for better reception.  West Maui residents can now tune in to a clearer feed of the same station on the new 92.9-FM frequency designated for that particular community.  As an added bonus, parts of Upcountry Maui can also pick up on the translator frequencies.

All four of Pacific Radio Group’s FM stations on Maui now have translator frequencies for clearer reception on the West side.   A list of current frequencies and west side translator frequencies are as follows:

STATION MAIN FM FREQUENCY TRANSLATOR FREQUENCY

 KPOA

93.5

92.9

 KJKS “KISS FM”

99.9

99.3

 KJMD “Da JAM”

98.3

107.3

 KLHI

101.1

101.7

Station Engineer Earl Tolley says the West side was a good fit for service because of the population density and remote nature of the community.  Pacific Radio Group CEO and President Chuck Bergson says the new translators re-open a whole new market for the company on the West Side, while the towers in Ulupalakua will continue to work wonders for the Central Maui region.
